Most employers know that it can be a painful and costly experience ridding themselves of an unwanted employee. It is usually expensive, time consuming and extremely disruptive. Despite this, far too few employers take sufficient steps to ensure that their promising new recruit is who and what they say they are.
Morgan Turner Freeman strongly recommends that employers take suitable steps to authenticate:-
A person's identity
Whether the person has any relevant criminal convictions
That the person has a suitable track record of performance in regard to attendance etc
We would recommend that as a bare minimum, employers at least conduct a criminal history check on their preferred employee. Since there is usually a delay in obtaining the results of these checks, we recommend that employment be contingent upon satisfactory results being received.
Ideally, criminal history checks are combined with previous employer reference checks to confirm that the person did actually work at the places they say they did, and did actually hold the positions they have stated. Furthermore, it is useful to determine how they performed in regard to attitude and attendance.
Where an individual will be placed in a position of financial trust, we would also recommend that financial credit checks be carried out to help determine whether they might be under financial stress and therefore tempted to misappropriate funds.
